It can just happen like that man. Most timing failures actually happen when you stop the engine, so that when you try and start it the next time the damage is done. It can be as simple as an improperly installed idler or mis-adjusted tensioner. Not as often it can be more devious- I have run across incidences where the timing gear bolts have loosened(or werent torqued properly) resulting in the alignment pins shearing. This can allow the gear to rotate a bit, often tightening the timing gear bolt- with the gears now out of time! Can be very very hard to initially diagnos, as your timing gears are likely to still align and yet the car has bent valves.
