autox tire choice

Ive been looking at buying a set of V710's to use for autox next year, and Im trying to decide on a size. has anyone actually used a set of the 275/40/17 on stock wheels. I know the 245s will be square, but Ive been reading that the more tire under the car, the better. will these tires actually fit without rubbing suspension, etc.

I used 245/45-17 V710s last year on my stock rims with the stock suspension. They fit fine with no issues, and they performed well, but they were actually so grippy that they overpowered the stock suspension. Over the Winter, I added a full race suspension, then moved up to 285/30-18 V710s on 18X9.5 rims with big spacers and fender rolling. I originally wanted to do some very light 17X9.5 rims with 275/40-17s, but those would not fit, because the tire is too tall and would rub on the inside. Doing 275/40s on stock rims is not goint to be good. Even 255s on the stock rim (17X8) hang over the edge a little bit.

I would suggest at least a 17X9 to fit 275 V710s, but then you'd have to make sure it can all fit. I couldn't confirm that, so I stepped up to 18s with a lower profile.

thanks for the advice, I guess Ive just been thinking greedily on wanting to stuff tire under there. Since I wont be upgrading suspension for another year or so, I'll just stick with the 245's. Thanks!

In that case, like me, you will also see what it's like to overpower the stock suspension with too much grip. It will look something like this:

i like the Toyo RA1's myself. sure they won't have as much grip as slicks, but they have a whole load of grip and predictable breakaway.

Not competitive, though. RA-1s are best as a track tire vice auto-x, since they have good grip and last a while. They aren't best for being competitive in auto-x (or on track, bust most people don't actually compete in road racing).
