Question 5mt vs. 6mt Tranny

Hey all,

I am looking to purchase an Evo but I'm curious about the reliability of the transmission. I don't care which one is "faster". I hear the Evo tranny is pretty bullet-proof but I can't tell which transmission specifically they are talking about.

So, in terms of reliabilty which one is better?

I heard that the 5sp has had some trouble with 3rd and 5th gear synchro rings wearing out but attributed to driver error mostly, can anyone verify this?? I am a noob so is this that big of a problem?

Also, today I saw in a post stating the 5mt is can handle a pound better than the 6mt, is this true?

Thanks for the help.

Matt

Yes, there are synchro issues with the 5spds, but that's mainly for 03-04s. There is a TSB for the 03 synchros.

The 6spd is not made by Mitsu and is more prone to major failure but only if you plan to race it. I doubt you would be able to break it if you don't plan to race, because gears 1-3 are extra strong, but gears 4-6 are very weak, so most people never have a problem. People who race have a high potential for busting 4th due to its being so weak.

What does "is can handle a pound" mean?

Our trannys are far from bullet proof but they can handle a decent amount of hp and tq so long as the DRIVER doesn't abuse it.

Haha, sorry, what I was trying to type was basically "can the 5sp handle more of a pounding than the 6sp?" Brain was fried from work.

Well I won't be doing anything crazy, if anything just a few things: Exhaust, pump, MBC and a tune.

I guess any tranny will break if abused, but is there any long term problems that is specific to the 5sp or the 6sp that would make me choose one over the other?

The IX's haven't had any major issues that I'm aware of...the O3's however had quite a few with the 3rd and 5th gear syncros (had my 3rd syncro replaced under TSP). Otherwise they hold up pretty well. This 6spd isn't that much different in gear ratio than the 5. The top gear is basically an extended 5th overdrive.

Power mods aren't the issue - I said if you're going to RACE it, then it matters. If you're not, then it's just up to you. The 6spd is nicer for daily driving than the 5spd, although the 1-4 gear ratios are almost identical to the IX 5spd (not the VIII 5spd). None of the trannies are known to just blow up randomly, so that shouldn't be a worry, but I'd get an 06 IX or 05 VIII if I were you.

Warr is right. You need to think about what you want to do with the car first then get the car. Mine I want to drive daily and hit the drag strip in the summers. so I went with the 5 speed 05 VIII. The 6 speed is to weak for the hard throws into 4th so I have heard. I went with what works at the track less gears and a better ratio. 6 speed is meant for daily driving that is it, just my two cents on the 6 speed. I wish sometimes I had it just to save on gas some times, tho.

Question How's the ride?

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I won't be dragging it or autox'ing. It won't be my DD either but I would prefer it more DD'ish. So it sounds like the MR for me.

Ok so new question:

For those who have driven both an Sti and Evo, which ride is "better"? I'm guessing each person has their own idea of comfort, but anything is helpful.

I've asked this question on another site that is biased to Sti's and got the response I expected. I thought I'd check to see if there is a different answer for a different bias.

"Ride" is a biased opinion however most of the magazines stated that the Evo 8 handled better with slightly better skid pad and slolom numbers than the older STi's. However there are new STi's out and the MR has a factory upgraded suspension and I haven't seen anything comparing them.

I love the EVO As far a daily driving. the ride is much better. The STI is stiff to me. Plus the all wheel drive system is better in my eyes as well.

The thing I like about the STi is the center diff bias is more controllable allowing you go up to 70% torque split to the rears.

Yeah that's a nifty feature.

Thanks again for the comments. I guess I just need to get my butt in an Evo and see how it compares to the Sti.

Alsop More room in the EVO. If you are 6'0 then The EVO is the way to go.
