Dealer: We changed your TB, but now your VVT(?) is bad.

EVO IX SE, totally stock except for bigger FMIC:

I had the belt replaced and left the dealer happy. 10 min. later the "Service engine soon" light came on. I went back. They checked it and said "your VVT is bad." VVT? I don't have VVT, I have MIVEC.

Either way...How do you "break the MIVEC, after doing the TB?" I have not done the TB on any EVO, but I have done it lots on my Talons. But I just don't know what there is to break. He said "its under the timing cover so he has to go in there and do the TB again." But at least they are paying for it.

if your t-belt jumps timing it can take out your motor. You probably bent valves and done a good bit of damage. That is ther fault if they didn't do it right. Did you do all 3 belts and the tbelt tensioner? I'm not sure how the mivec works but i know it changes cam profile so if it jumped timing it could have broken something. Ask for more details. I would but also expect to be down for a awhile, they should send your head out and have it checked for cracks and see if the valves are bent.

Now you say it was just a check engine light. What is the code? maybe the cam sensor for the mivec is messed up. you def need to get more info, it would be stupid not to.

well the motor ran fine. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the 4g63 can be at maximum 1 tooth off? After that its goodbye motor. Because I have heard of that before.

i think its the cam sensor, just bad luck maybe or maybe he accidentally hit it...

Thanks, I was planning on asking exact details on Monday.

it all depends on what is going in with the car. Some are zero tolerance and others have made it out ok. From what I have seen at a mitsu dealer is if it jumps at idle, go find a head.........The evo can be off at the crank up to 9* from whati've seen, mine was off 8* when my tensionor was going..... my car has 136k on it and about 400whp, it doesn't get driven lightly

I don't think its jumped, because it was driveable, though when I drove it home, there was a little more vibration than I usually notice. Especially on the gas pedal. I guess I will find out this week. Maybe I'll get a brand new motor!
