Evo MR question

Ok guys I am new to this board but not to cars. I know enough about performance work to get myself in trouble but next to nothing about the evo other than they mounted the damn engine backwards.

I have been into the DSM scene for years and loads of experience with breaking them and honestly decided to grow up/into an Evo so I picked up a 2006 MR last week. What if anything from my DSM days will help with tuning this car?

I am also curious as to why someone would swap a 5 spd from the RS into an MR, because when I was searching for my new car this guy had done so. I thought he was crazy so I checked vins and the car was certainly equiped with the MR package when it left the dealership.

Last but not least what is the recomended clutch for this car because I know the factory clutch is garbage. I am used to ACT from my DSM days but I am not sure if they make the best clutches for the evos.

Thanks for the help guys and take it easy on this newb.

The MR 6-speed transmissions are know for weaker gears perticularly 4th. Because the 5 and 6-speed transmissions are about the same size they have to stuff an extra gear in the 6-speed meaning thinner=weaker gears. I have an 05 MR and I have thought I broke 4th several times and didn't, thank god. What that evo owner did was he broke the 6-speed and to save money he swaped is the rs or gsr 5-speed transmission in.
As for clutch choice I have the ACT Heavy Duty Street clutch in mine and I love it...Except heavy traffic in my work boots (sucks ass). Other than that its fine. My friend is also using one in his 03 gsr and has the same response as me, its stiff but not rediculous or anything.

The MR's have a 6-speed transmission, bilstein shocks, and BBS wheels. The GSR or RS have a 5-speed transmission and Enkei wheels. After 05 all have Active center differential with three settings: Tarmac, Gravel, Snow which adjusts the ACD to apply torque to the front and rear wheels. MR's were not available until 05 which is the last evo 8 model year. The RS was introduced in 06 with the evo 9 that have mivec (variable valve timing) on the intake camshaft.
Now if your talking evo x then the MR has a twin clutch 6-speed automated manual and the GSR has a standard 5-speed.
VD5505 if your looking for more info check out evolutionm.net I just joined this forum and it is just starting out from what I can tell but evolutionm has an ASS load of info for ya. PM me if you have any more questions and i'll try to answer them.
