I'd be willing to bet that it's a dealer add-on. At one time, many dealers put almost identical pinstripes on their cars and asked for $200-$300 in extra fees. When I bought my GTI in '91, it also came with almost identical pinstripes. They began to peel about a month into ownership, which gave me an excuse to have the dealer remove them. When I was buying the car, the dealer wanted to charge me for the removal, but gave me the pinstripes for (err...) "free."

If they are from the factory most of the time the clear coat will be over the sticker if not my guess is a dealer add on.

all dealers put pinstripes on cars. They are always dealer installed options. At my dealer we put them on for free but not all cars because some look better without. i like the evo without them personally

Yea, I really want to get into Auto-X. I gotta get this 3rd gear grind straightened out though.

Dealers do that ALL the time.

Pen stripes now days are basically just a vinyl sticker (as opposed to painted stripes), if that is what they are I would remove them even if they look good. Eventually they will either crack or peel, in which case you will probably want to remove them anyway. If you live in an area where its sunny all the time, there will be a slight color difference if its a year or so down the line (between the paint underneath the stripes and the normal paint). Most wont notice it, but you as the owner will. Its more or less like the rug over the carpet theory, even if the carpet appears to be in great shape the the stuff under the rug is brand new.

If you do decide to remove them, make sure they have NOT been cleared coated over. My guess is they have not.

But hey, the car looks hot congrats on the purchase.
