Just got a used 05 evo 8...scarry sound while shifting!?! Please help!!

Hey guys,

This is my first post...so please bare with me...I got a used 2005 evo 8 (Japanese Spec) just yesterday and took it for a drive for the first time and noticed an insane sound coming from the clutch...

When I down shift, I hear a very loud grinding noise...however I noticed that when I down shift and give it a little bit of gas....the sound goes away??!??! What is going on...

My mechanic said that the sound is normal cause it has a clutch other than the oem...dunno what it is, but he told me its not a twin plate....

Anyways, there is also a very loud whinning sound in the car when i'm driving it...my friend who owns the same car (us spec) said that it was time to change the differential...

I know that I need to change all the fluids right aways, brake pads, spark plugs, but the differential and lsd are INSANELY expensive here in the middle east...what can I do????

I know eventually i'm going to have to change the differentials, but what about the clutch?? My mechanic said you could switch back to stock oem clutch, but the one I have will last much longer (something about copper platted)???? Help please....

Cheers

the clutch sounds almost like its aftermarket and the OEM tOB wasn't used. As for the whine your tcase or diff may be dying and need a rebuild....just because you have a different clutch doesn't mean it will last longer. It just may clamp high loads......You need to change out all your fluids if your t-case is whining. This may make it last a little longer. Good luck

Thanks alot for replying...I will change all my fluids right away including the diff oil...you mentioned that the diff or transfer case could be rebuilt? If so, that would be a much cheaper option for me right now...

I actually didn't get what you meant with OEM tOB??

OEM would be stock and TOB is throw out bearing..... Most of the aftermarket ones tend to make horrible noises, OEM holds up great and has next to no sound. you can get the t-case rebuilt by shep. its on his site check it out, once again there are various options.....and remember you have to look at the ACD price.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmnnn!!!! Its 1450 to rebuild the T-Case!!!?!?! And that doesn't include shipping...I live in the not so cool middle east....its going to cost me a fortune!!! Hahahah....oh well...we'll see what happens when I change all fluids...

Can I replace the throw out bearing with an OEM one?? Would that fit with an aftermarket clutch?? Or does each clutch come with its own bearing??

Guys...I appreciate your help alot...

Cheers

No you can use the oem throw out bearing on an aftermarket clutch, its recommended or like siclanevo said you will have the noise your talking about. The transfer case may not need a rebuild change the fluids and roll around a big open parking lot turning in big sweeps and listen for was sound like an air plane drone. If that sound is present most likely it is the transfer case if not you should be good. You have to listen real close because it will normally be lounder than say a rwd or fwd because its awd.
Sorry about the price, for you it might be cheaper to send it to japan or england to have it rebuilt. Good luck hope its not the transfer case and its just the throw out bearing.

Oh, and $1450 for a rebuild is better than the $3000+ for a oem replacement. Yeah it still is expensive but just remember with an evo it can always be more expensive.

lol just to rebuild my 03 tcase is like $350, lol. you guys got the shaft with ACD. If i want to rebuild with a quailfe lsd then its like $1200. Yeah man shipping and downtime would suck for you unless you have a good trans shop near you just order the parts and have them rebuild it.
