I think there's a small error in the first post -- the 03 and 04 VIII RS models did not come with an aluminum roof. I believe it started with the VIII MR and MR RS specs and all of the IX specs
Also worth noting that the JDM MR DV was not available in 2003 and 2004 Evo VIII and were only available from the VIII MR (and all spec levels) and IX models
As for the 05 MR VIII MR RS (5-speed), it did not come with the 10.5 hotside (HRA105T-16G) but the 0.8 (HRA98T-16G) instead. The 5-speed MR RS also comes with a rear aluminum cross brace in the trunk that was not available in other non-RS models, and the engine internals of the VIII MR RS are of the Evo VIII's not the VIII MR GSR.
"The track-ready Evolution RS also receives one body panel from the MR Edition: its roof, which is made of lightweight aluminum for lower weight and a lower center of gravity. The RS also receives thin trunk-lid sheet metal to decrease weight."
Ghoonk, all of the information in this thread is for USDM models. I did not consider the JDM and Euro models, so if you'd like to start a separate thread giving those details, that would be very helpful. I will change this title to specify USDM...
There was no 03 RS, and the 04 RS definitely came with the aluminum roof. It was the first model to get the aluminum roof and front LSD at least in the US...
Only the JDM MR had the aluminum BOV. Our USDM 05 MRs got the regular plastic BOV. Only our 06s have them stock (all models).
Again, all this info you're giving is for non-USDM Evos...
When you mention the 04 RS are you referring to the VIII MR RS or the VIII RS? The MR RS was introduced in 2004, but I am not sure if it reached US shores by then.

There is no USDM MR RS - just RS (no wing, no power accessories, no sound deadening, alum roof) and MR (BBS, alum roof, 6spd, VG, Bilsteins) as separate choices. We have never had an MR RS.
However, I have had all 4 of my brembo brake calipers and the rear wing replaced under warranty due to cosmetic defects. The 4 calipers were pealing around the bleeder valve and the rear spoiler's clear coat was starting to fade away.
Also, some owners have had issues with rust appearing under the rear wing, so check that out if haven't yet.
I also just had my wing replaced under warranty when the clear coat began to fade. When I took the wing off, there was SLIGHT rusting where the wing touched the trunk in one place, but it was minimal. I have seen pics of widespread rust on other cars when removing the trunk, though.
any idea to the recalls and/or tsb's out on the evo's?
The CarFax.com report I got before I bought my '03 listed one manufacturer recall.
Apparently the stickers on the door were mis-printed and the load capacity was lower than what was listed. This recall had the potential to break axles on your car, due to over-loading it. But I don't remember by how much.
Be very careful before you haul 4 people weighing more than 250lbs each, or half a ton of scrap metal in your '03, though.
(I know this seems silly, and so does my post, but it really was a warning in the report and if someone is building a list, I guess this can go on it.)
Just wanted to throw out a quick thank you for this thread, before making my first thread on "buying tips", i searched and this was the first one that popped up and it gave me a great idea on what to look into when im out looking to make my purchase. Nice work!
Heck yes this thread and site is very insightful for newbies and future EVO owners. I'm not quite an evo owner but doing research on which would be best for my needs. thanks
