Piece together a 20g turbo question...

Mitsubishi turbo parts are swapped here and there all the time and this little idea has popped into my head;
Can a 20g turbo be built off the Evo exhaust housing? Would it be a quick spooler with an efficient wheel? What if the 10cm housing was added? Will there be a problem with the reversed direction? The parts are out there;

I'm thinking back on DSM days; buy the 16g compressor housing, wheel, and CHRA and slap it on to the 6cm 14B exhaust housing. Something like this, but for us, and in a 20g;

I'm tempted (some time in the future) to buy a 20g wheel and compressor housing, replace the stock ones, have it balanced, throw it in, and see what happens.
Is this a crazy idea?

No Joy

The EVO 16G is reverse scroll from most other mitsubishi turbo's and that means the turbin blades of the 20G are curved in the wrong direction to work in an EVO 16G. Buschur Racing has commissioned the production of reverse rotation 20G wheels and is in the testing phase right now. The only problem they are having is that with a 20G wheel in the stock 16G housing they get compressor surge at low RPM high load situations.

OK. I still have crazy ideas about bigger turbos that have been used and pruven on the DSM side. PTE 50 trim, 20g, FP Green... and these are basically bolt on turbos, just not for us. How about this;
Get away from the reverse scroll with a custom exhaust manifold, but the manifold outlet is the standard Mitsubishi 7cm four bolt flange (http://linux.forcedperformance.net/m...G6001_full.jpg)
It would also require a custom O2 housing, but what I'm getting at is this;
Would that open the door for Evo's to use these and numerous other turbos that are well known for 4g63 power? And possibly do it for around $1500?
I still need to read Bushur's stuff on the 20g, but is it compressor surge or boost creep?

P.S.
Never mind on the 50 trim. Did some plots on the compressor map and was well into the surge limit at several RPM's at 24psi.

confused

Why don't mitsu turbo's work on an evo? slightly different 4g63, but a turbo is a turbo, you bolt it onto the exhaust manifold, garret/hybrid, are you guys saying that the turbo is pointing the wrong way, ie intake on wrong side vs exhaust side?

One problem is that the normal DSM turbo's will not bolt up to the EVO manifold. They face the wrong way, making it so your intake plumbing is on the wrong side of the turbo (not to hard to fix) and your O2 housing is on the wrong side to bolt up to the down pipe (pain in the @ss to fix).

So you say, why not just bolt the compressor wheel from one of the DSM turbo's into the EVO housing? Because it would be rotating in the wrong direction. Spin a turbo's compressor wheel backwards and it does not compress air.... it just spins there doing nothing.

Keith

PS: One solution I have seen for this is a custom header that mounts the turbo upside down above the header with a custom O2 housing that reaches down to where the downpipe starts. Really weird looking setup.
