Some Newbie Questions :D

Hey guys! I'm new here and just days away from buying my first Evo and am SO excited

This will be the first car I own that ill actually be able to upgrade, but being that I have never done it before I know VERY little about it but would love to learn more, I'm planning on taking some auto classes at the city college around here also and am very stoked on that too.

I realize this has been asked many times on this forum and I did search through some, but usually the people asking have more know-how/what then I do so the responces are usually rather cryptic to me.

The car is going to be a 2005 Evo VIII MR

What would you guys suggest for first mods?
What would the purpose of these mods be? (IE. what does it do?)
What brand(s) would you suggest for these mods?
and finally, what would the general price tag on each mod be?

Welcome to the boards and your new Evo.
The first upgrade for these cars is the exhaust. Cat-back, test pipe/high flow cat, downpipe; in that order. Here's our guide too help out a little too;

The pupose for all mods/upgrades is to increase effiecency, power, and performance. Most allow the motor to breath easier and therefore; more air, plus more fuel, equals more power.
I will never suggest a brand. What works for me and meets my goal may not work for you or your budget. You need to seriously think about what you want out of your car, set a goal, and then research what it takes to get you there. Then ask questions to learn more about the part, it's actual effects others have experienced, and the true costs involved.

Both due to availabilty and price, it looks like I may end up getting the straight Evo 8 instead of the MR both due to price and availability. Though I've heard from a number of people the shocks on them arnt the most smooth ride. I dont mean to make you go against your own rule, but what would you suggest for good (and smooth riding) shocks?

I've been looking around and for the most part everyone says theirs are the best, and since I dont have any first hand experience with this kind of thing and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Use the stock suspension for a while, see if you get used to it. Maybe try it without the front strut tower bar. Sorry, but I can't recommend anything for suspension because I'm sticking with stock. Post a question in the Handeling Tech section.
Before you get into parts; What do you want from your car?

for now mainly a bit of added speed (which the link you gave me before helped out a lot, so thanks for that)

I'm asking about shocks now because from what I've heard (note: only what I've heard) the shocks on the evo 8s (excluding the MR) although good, arnt the most comfortable ride. being that I've only ridden in the MR I cant really base my oppinion off anything. What has been your experience with the comfort of the stock shocks?

You live in California, land of smoooooooth highways and no potholes from winter frost... that means the stock suspension should be great for your needs.
