So yesterday my VIII had a vacuum leak due to a loose clamp on the IX diverter valve. I picked my daughter up from school and the idle was bad, like it wanted to stall out. While driving it was running fine, AFR was dead on, oil pressure was perfect, just the idle was off.
This morning I start it up and the idle issue is still there, but now its ticking REAL loud! Its almost like the car has no oil, but theres full pressure and the dipstick reads perfect on the full line.
I fixed the vacuum leak, reset the ECU and its still running like sh!t. It wants to stall, the AFR's go lean (15.2-15.5) to super rich (11.1- 10.8) and the damn thing sounds like a diesel truck in how it is ticking and the idle.
Anyone have this issue before because of a vacuum leak? Any other thoughts or suggestions?
BTW, my mods are TBE/MBC/IX BOV/CAMS/Dynoflash, if that means anything.
there are no codes and i haven't done any mods recently. just pulled off the DV to fix the leak.
Justin, i haven't heard this before. it sounds like its coming from the valve cover mostly, but its so loud i really can't tell. i haven't even tried to get it on the street cause i'm afraid to blow it up.
How long ago were the cams done? Which ones are they? You shouldnt have top-end noises and I wouldnt start/run/drive the car much more until you have had the valve cover off and the timing checked. I probably have some free time later today or maybe tomorrow and could maybe swing by and look at it if you wanted.
I would say you have something seriously wrong in the top end, and I would at least pull the VC before you start it again. I would also definitely check your timing marks as the lack of Vac at idle is a bit worrisome. If I can help in any way feel free to ask.
how does its just jump timing? everything was fine until i started it sat morning. i do remember it not sounding right when i fired it up, something about the way it turned over wasn't right...
It can just happen like that man. Most timing failures actually happen when you stop the engine, so that when you try and start it the next time the damage is done. It can be as simple as an improperly installed idler or mis-adjusted tensioner. Not as often it can be more devious- I have run across incidences where the timing gear bolts have loosened(or werent torqued properly) resulting in the alignment pins shearing. This can allow the gear to rotate a bit, often tightening the timing gear bolt- with the gears now out of time! Can be very very hard to initially diagnos, as your timing gears are likely to still align and yet the car has bent valves.
Once again, if you need any help at all feel free to drop me a line.
its official, the timing belt jumped 2 teeth AND my walbro is going out. both at the same time, what are the chances!?! so arapahoe is doing the timing belt, hopefully all valves are good. now i just need to find a new fuel pump...
