Improving Side Impact Zone ?

NHTSA Side Impact Rating for the EVO8 is 2 Stars out of 5.

This really concerns me considering I just walked away from a T-Bone accident about a month ago. Since the EVO 8 doesn't have side airbags, how do you guys suggest we improve the design to better our chances of surviving a side impact?

What do you guys think about adding a harness bar to improve side impact collisions? Would this help, or potentially be more of a liability? How about a 4-point roll cage? Are these even street legal?

Thanks,

- Steve

PS: Here's a picture of my last accident back in December. T-Boned at 50 mph by a Ford F150. NOT FUN

LEXUS IS300 NHTSA Side Impact Rating 5/5

A roll cage would help transfer the impact to other points of the car so that would help the harnes bar will be better then nothing but remember the more points on the roll cage means the car can take more of an impact every point is another spot to transfer the impact to. I like them. One person on here does not like them in a the EVO UNLESS IT IS A FULL RACE CAR. I say BS that is just being safe. Plus at 11.49 at Bandi you must have one period to race.

Well for $400, you can get yourself a 4 Pt Roll Cage. Which doesn't seem all that expensive to me, considering it might save your life.

Thanks for the help fellas, it's appreciated.

Just make sure you weld it together. Even if it is a bolt in. The Bolt in's are not as safe as a weld-in.

Steve, if you want complete safety, you might want to go with a 6pt roll cage like the one cusco makes. That way if you ever do decide to really get into racing, you'll have something pretty solid. Also, I believe these all have to be welded in, so once you choose one, it's not really a great idea to ever cut it out and weld another one in.

However, I'm not sure if the 6pt requires rear seat removal......

The Cusco is a bolt in. this will not pass any ones tech NHRA nor SCCA. So please get a weld in one Period. the bolt in ones are a good to buy but make sure you weld it to each other.

Thanks for correcting me. I didn't take a good look at it to see. My other hobbie is rock crawling, which of course is completely different, but I have like a 12pt roll cage on my cherokee. I forgot how many contact points I actually have, it's probably more

Coevopower, let me know when you decide on a roll cage. I'd be interested in seeing how much it ends up costing you and how easy it is to install. Thanks for the info fellas, it's appreciated.

We should start a car club with only people that drive with harness bars and harness on. I would be willing to put one in the wifes car.

Club name would be Bar Rollers or some other ricer name that sprays NOS and has stickers on their cars would work.

Also if it is a 12pt roll cage that does mean it is connected to 12 points on your frame. but I do not think you have that it could be a 6 or a 8pt. 6 is what I am building for mine this winter. I plan on the summer of 09 hitting that 11.49 mark.
