It happens to me a couple times when I'm spraying and going all out. I have headstuds. I have everything actually. You name it... My leak is from a hairline crack in the top of the radiator. I bet yours is too. Nothing out of the ordinary happens like you said. Just a puff of white smoke from the hood vents for a couple seconds, then it's gone. Few green drops on my fan and radiator. I haven't upgraded to a koyo yet... Guess I should.
Go with the CBRD radiator if you're going to upgrade... They are very nice units and put the outlet neck in line with the thermostat housing. He also includes a slim fan already mounted for you. Let me know if you need a link...
