Hey guys, i've just moved to Denver from Scotland due to my job.
I owned an Evo 8 back home - a 2005 grey MR FQ340 with 410bhp @ fly (330+ @ wheels) and loved it. It was mildly tuned, with ECUTEK flash, Walbro fuel pump, de-cat 3" exhaust, Apexi AVCR boost controller, uprated actuator, dump valve, etc etc.
I am thinking about getting one over here, as i miss it. I am however concerned about how modified Evo's run over here as the gas is low octane - back home i ran mine on 99 RON unleaded, which you could get at the pumps!
Where is the nearest reputable Evo tuner to me in the Denver/CO area? If there is one near me then this will greatly influence my decision in getting one. I cant believe how cheap the Evo's are over here!
I am also considering getting a 2004 911/996 C4S, or a 2005 997 C2S because they are half the price compared to UK, but i just love turbo-charged cars! There's an outside chance i may stretch to a 2003 911 Turbo.
i've owned a 500bhp Cosworth in the past, as well as an M3, and a 850 kilo Peugeot 205 GTI hot hatch with 230bhp Mi16 engine in it (twin carbs, high lift cams, head work, etc), which i used to race. It was quicker to 100mph than the M3!
Well to answer a few of your questions Lucas at Carz Performance in Lakewood is proberly the best guy and shop around town. He has the most expeirence with Evo's since he owns 2 of them and has tuned numerous others including myself. His phone number is 720-214-5095. You can talk to Lucas or Dave or Shane and they are all great guys and they know their stuff.
You are lucky to get such high Octane cause over here 93 is about the best, which of course is not really sold here in CO. You may be able to find a couple of gas stations that sell it but not enough.
The new stuff that is becoming big for the Local Evo's is E85 which is corn oil I beleive and so far has shown to produce some pretty nice numbers. Next week there is a tuning meet at Carz and a few cars will be tuned for E85. You may be impressed with the numbers, plus its cheaper than 85 octane by like a dollar almost. There is about 20-30 gas stations that have it at the pump which for me is enough cause I don't drive my car all over. I can say that we all hope to see you there at the meet on the 26th 9 am at Carz. See ya.
For tuning, I suggest Justin (JustDSM), as he is very cheap and very high quality. You are definitely covered as far as tuning.
Don't be too concerned about the octane. We don't list our octane in RON, but rather (RON+MON)/2. Your 99 RON isn't high octane like our 99. I think 99 RON is close to our 93. We only get 91 here, but the higher altitude reduces the need for octane, so it works out fine. You will have no problem making power on pump gas - we all do it.
With the elevation you do not "need" as much octane tan at sea level and also it is not the same rating in Europe:
In most countries (including all of Europe and Australia) the "headline" octane that would be shown on the pump is the RON, but in the United States, Canada and some other countries the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, sometimes called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI), Road Octane Number (RdON), Pump Octane Number (PON), or (R+M)/2. Because of the 8 to 10 point difference noted above, this means that the octane in the United States will be about 4 to 5 points lower than the same fuel elsewhere: 87 octane fuel, the "regular" gasoline in the US and Canada, would be 91-92 in Europe. However most European pumps deliver 95 (RON) as "regular", equivalent to 90-91 US (R+M)/2, and even deliver 98 (RON) or 100 (RON).
One thing you need to get used to in the US, is that most people, when you say race track, mean drag racing track... So shops are very drag racing oriented and really don't know much about left AND right turns...
Welcome!!
the 205 GTI is my whole youth!! (I'm French ), that and the R5 GT Turbo!! memories.....
Also, we'll be at Carz on the 26 for a tune day with Justin!! You shoudl try to make it!!
BTW, don't forget to wear sunscreen!! a lot more sun here than in Scotland....
Bring back the 80's hot hatches!! so flimsy but great fun, no air bags, no ABS, no nothing!! loved it.
Yes i noticed there's a lot of drag racing here, where for me it is more of a test of skill to race round tracks. some cars over here handle terribly (Mustang) but i guess its all looooooooong straight roads! surely some nice twisty roads up to the moutains though?
i hope to see you guys at Carz soon then.
thanks for warm welcome. I'm swaying towards an Evo again. a good bit cheaper than the Porsche, which will give me some spare cash for upgrades and mods - yipee!
EVO!!!! EVO!!!!! you will be among friens unlike the yuppies driving the Porsche. Everyone on here are great guys. Warr is the guy to talk to about twisty roads. he can talk to you about SCCA or what ever.

Yeah, I can steer you right for real racing, but I don't know anything about mountain roads. I keep all my high speed driving, cornering, and braking in the safest-possible environment: on track.
I'll be up in Denver that weekend, so I'll probably stop by for the meet! And welcome to the new guy, get an EVO and mod the hell out of it if you have some money to spend
oh i have some money to spend, i lived in the UK remember, everything over here is about half the price, its great, i'm never leaving .. ever!
i had an 8 back home, but can get a 9 MR here and that has the MIVEC so i should get more torque when i mod it. my target would be quite modest - aiming for 400/400 @ the fly (330 ish at the wheels i guess, with the same lbs/ft torque figure).
i'm aiming for a low mileage 2006 9 MR in grey from a dealer/garage. price seems to be around $30k for a good one? these cars were over £30k GBP in the UK a year ago ($60k USD)!!

Hell they have them at the dealerahips right now. And you will hit that mark 400 @ the Flywheel no prob. Just some bolt on things will get you close. Shot for higher. I am shooting for a Vet killer one day money promiting...lol

I recommend considering a IX SE. They have the best combinations of features and the best performance of any model besides the RS, but of course with way more creature comforts.
You also probably don't want the Aisin 6spd that we get in the MR here if you plan on road racing. I already blew mine (4th gear) on the road course.
