Should I put all my efforts towards getting an Evo?
Hello all, I am a 19yr college student, and a car lover. I have been thinking for years what car I should get. I really don't want an STI, cuz there are already too damn many on the streets, and the evo is faster anyway. I really want the AWD for Colorado, and I really want the SPEED! I have been intensively researching the 03 Evo 8. I guess my question is, is the evo the car for me? Is it worth being broke for?
Would you be broke, or would you end up with it repossessed? I can't imagine what you could do for a living at 19 that would make you able to afford an Evo. Even the 03s go for 20k, and that's for a 5 year old car that has huge insurance premiums, high maintenance costs, and high gas costs. Spec out the total cost of owning an Evo, and then determine if you can truly afford it for the next 4-5 years.
I decided when I was 16 years old that I wanted an EVO... I loved them and my boyfriend had one which I loved driving and being in. At the time I had a Cavalier that I had paid off from my parents, it was a POS but wasn't allowed to sell it until I was 18 and my parents signed the title over to me. One month after my 18th birthday I bought a 01 Audi A4 for $14000, I had saved up almost $7k from working from the time I was 16 to 18. Once I sold my Cavalier for $7k the Audi was paid off! 13 months later, at the age of 19 I bought my 2006 STi for $29k... The dealership gave me $13500 for my audi so I only owed $15500 for my STi.... Then the mistake of getting rid of the STi for a TSX came along (this is when I got rapped for money and ended up losing $6k when I sold it).
Now I have the EVO and she is here to stay and I'll be 21 in 3 months....
I guess it makes it easier to own a nice car when you start working your way up to one thing. Seeing as I've been saving/going through cars for almost 5 years now....
this may be true, but this guy is still in college, right? how would you pay for a 20K car like that? part time jobs dont bring in that much money, and even if all your school stuff is taken care of, car payment+insurance premium+gas/fixing up stuff=$$$$$$ per month.
can you afford it? it all comes down to your choice. if you are just barely going to get by every month paying for it, it won't be that fun at all. if this is the easy part, go ahead and get one.
always plan ahead... check on what you insurance prices would be, how much would you spend on gas a month (especially since it's so damn expensive), what kind of interest would you be paying on a loan... etc.
Those are the easy things to predict, but what about a $1200 clutch job (likely on an 03), $300 on brakes, $600-800 on new tires, etc. A 5yr old Evo is going to cost a LOT to maintain, and 03s have the most issues.
hey 03's are the shit we are the original's... hehe
I second that
If you can afford it then do it. I agree with warr though. It will cost to maintain it. I know at 19 there was no way I could afford it. Some kids get backed by there parents and that is why they have evos. If you dont have financial backing...then be careful. You may be able to afford the car but you may not be able to afford to maintain it....trust me.... I have two of them and it ain't cheap

I dunno what kind of 03's people have been getting but mine has had very few if any maintenance problems. (Other than the ones I may have caused myself from modding)
If you want on '03 definitely check to see if it has a newer clutch. The rest is just like any other used car. How's the tire wear, how are the brakes, what's the engine bay look like. These are all things to consider when buying ANY car.
My '03 hasn't cost me much more to maintain than any other car I've owned. But then again I've always used good summer tires, synthetic oil and good brake pads for all of my vehicles. The Evo is not a money pit as some would make it out to seem unless of course you get a car that someone beat the piss out of.
Back to the original topic... Check your finances. Can you afford the payment? Call your insurance company and have them quote you a premium. Now can you afford that plus the car payment? Don't forget gas and how much you drive daily. Gotta use 91 octane or better which these days is over $3 a gallon.
you should also have someone check out the car before you buy it. it's an evo and the chances that it's been modded are pretty high! you don't want a car that someone's beaten the crap outta then put back to stock to try and get rid of in a hurry...
Just a heads up, but my roommate just traded in his bone stock 04 silver evo with ssl and ~25k miles to quality mitsubishi for a X. So if you want a super clean stock car you might want to look that way.

Depends miss Samantha!!! Look at my car...well I guess I didn't really beat the crap out of it more than Trenz killing my clutches haha. But my car ran 21psi on that T67 at 450hp for the last couple years and that motor runs amazing now that it's back to stock. I guess my car is probably a different story other than most people who just throw it together broken and sell it.

ya because you know other people that work on their own cars and don't know what the hell they are doing will eventually have problems with it... unless they are very very lucky
And that's the issue I don't want to deal with trying to sell my car. I could put it back to stock and sell off the parts but how can I know that I won't have any issues with the car after doing so. And who will believe it hasn't been beat on when I sell them a car with an upgraded trans, transfer case, built head all on a stock turbo?
Modification is wonderful thing...right up until you want to sell it. LOL
Well lucky for me some kid hit me a few months ago and made me selling my highly modded Evo even tougher since it was involved in that accident. So its a keeper. Nobody wants a beat to Shizz Evo that was rammed in the buttocks by a kid texting his ghey lover.
