You said "the main cars I encounter..." I don't "encounter" cars at the drag strip, and you didn't mention drag racing, so it leads one to believe...

Anyway, the alternative to buying a stock airbox is to just get tuned. You can get a $199 mail-in Dynoflash to make the intake work fine.

In risk of being off-topic in this thread: How would I reflash my ECU? Wouldn't I need software? And if I don't do it soon will it screw up my car? I mean my car is a blast to drive now and I don't do a lot of racing so I may just wait. I am trying to get the $$ for the Buschur stage one which I believe has a flash included.

Oh and sorry if I was misleading about the racing thing, I guess it did have an illegal sound to it

It gets done by a flash tuner. Notice I said a mail-in Dynoflash. That means you mail your ECU to Dynoflash who flashes it, then sends it back. All Buschur packages include a Dynoflash, which is the same thing. You get your mods, install them, then send the ECU to get flashed.

You likely won't screw up your car from continuing to drive with the intake, but it sure does affect drivability and performance. I guess you wouldn't know any better, though, since it's been like that from day one.

I have never had any luck running cai's. Oregon is a pretty tought place to have one. The MAF housing screws up everything. The dealers have a easy cop out when they see them.

all i have is a K&N panel filter on mine and it works great. as far as tuning goes, i do like my xede and its not that tough to tune on your own better than the AFC in so many ways. and it heped my car out a lot especially after the 3'' exhaust. evos feel so slow here in reno and this helped it out a lot.

I'm a long time dsmtuners member and never heard a comment like this before. Is there a major differnence in the ECU's between the two, an EVO and a DSM?

That was my very first mod on my GSX and it seemed to run better than stock. I did the same on my wife's Toyota Matrix in which we get better gas mileage and a noticeable increase in performance.

In a DSM you could do quite a few mods before it got time for an AFC. It seems that with an EVO it is sugested to get the ECU reflashed after each mod. I'm just not understand the major difference.

Yes, there are major differences in the ECUs between DSM and Evos. Hell, there's major differences from an 05 Evo to an 06 Evo. We cannot toss on intakes without tunes, whereas on my 3 DSMs, it was the first mod I did.

I recently bought my 03 evo which came with a hks intake a boost gauge. I've owned two other dsm's and didn't really think that the intake was a big deal the car seems to drive fine I don't really think that it made it faster but it seems to pull well like a stock car should. Is the factory airbox something I should also look into?

You should not have bought it without ensuring that they gave you the entire stock intake. The HKS should not be used without a tune. It's best to use the stock intake until you get tuned and even if you get tuned. That intake is mainly for bling, although I personally think that nasty mushroom filter is the ugliest thing I've ever seen, but I seem to be in the minority.

If you don't have the stock intake, then look into getting tuned soon.
