what exactly is a scatter shield? does it just keep pieces of the flywheel from shooting out and hurting someone if you shatter your fw?

If you look at where the transmission is on our cars you will see that you are sitting directly behind it. That means that if your flywheel shatters at say 7k rpms and pieces decide to fly out, they will be coming directly at you. Not good for your legs to say the least.

The scattershield acts as a barrier to help reduce the speed, or even stop completely the pieces that could fly out.

Exactly correct. It contains the exploded bits of flywheel / bell housing generated by a flywheel failure.
