How do I read knock via factory ECU?

I have an 03 EVO with XEDE computer. I also have a wideband and am beginning to build a custom tune map for my XEDE. The problem is I cannot find a way to measure knock so I cannot tell when my tune may have too much timing.

Suggestions?

you'll probably have to look to see if the ecu is pulling timing to determine if the knock count exceeds the threshold. it's a delicate balance.

If you've got a wideband though i'd first shoot for your afr's and only then play with timing otherwise you'll be creating more work for yourself. Think of afr's as the foundation and the timing correction as the icing on the cake to pair two completely different analogies.

I have the car tuned at 11:1 across the board but I want to make sure I am not promoting knock at that AFR. Easiest way to read timing?

11:1 is pretty rich, so it's very unlikely that you have any knock, but the way most of us "log" knock is by logging our timing and AFR curves. You can detect knock by noticing dips or flat spots in timing. When rich, it would be tough to knock...

With the XEDE I can log timing.....however.....It shows up as a value like 204 or 190.....I'm not sure what those values mean.....I'll have to call Vishnu up and get more info.

11:1 on pump gas isn't overly rich.....I would call it at best safe.

How are you logging your timing?

How are you logging your timing?

It's not overly rich, but it's rich. 11.5:1 is safe and 12:1 is on the edge. The problem is that people have gone from thinking 11.5:1 is safe to it being on the edge, so they are tuning to the low 11s/high 10s. There's no need to do that, though.

I use a standard pocketlogger with Palm'N'Stein software. It gives me timing numbers that are what you'd be used to seeing for tuning purposes (0-25 or so).
