Hi and welcome. Evo 9 Mr or SE!!! The Evo 9 is equiped with Mivec, that means more power with less money.Mr pros- BBS wheels,6 speed trans, aluminum roof.SE pros- black diamond BBS wheels, front lip spoiler. Cons-no sunroof. Just my 2 cents.
The 8 and 9 aren't that close. The 9 is far and away the best Evo to get, and of the available models on the 9, the best one is the regular SE. The 9 has the most power, and it's not because of the MIVEC, but becuase of the revamped turbo that makes more power for a given boost level and because of a revamped head that allows more boost for a given octane. The MIVEC does its part, too, but it doesn't really affect peak power.
The SE version is a special edition that came out late last year and provides many of the features of the MR that we've always wanted on the base Evo but was never available before:
- aluminum roof
- HIDs
- lightweight BBS rims, which happen to have a diamond black finish
- Special SE interior
- 5spd, which is preferable to the 6spd, which has weak gears 4-6
The SE does not have the Bilstein shocks of the MR, which is the only downside, but when it costs 3-4k less, it's a much better value.
ive raced a MR evo. and it seems they shift way to much where as the 5 speed sticks to the gearalot longer
so im guessing I would want the 5speed than?
You raced against an MR and could tell he was shifting too much? Mmmm, not sure how that could be. Anyway, the IX 5spd has almost identical gearing in gears 1-4 as the 6spd, so the shifts are the same up to 110-115mph. After that, the 6spd has 2 gears for 110-160 while the 5spd has one. If you know about gearing, you know that means the 6spd's 5th gear is much shorter and has much better acceleration than the 5spd 5th gear.
Regardless, I doubt any of this will have any effect on you. There's certainly no big difference in # of shifts in the area within which most people drive/race.
