Fuel Cut in 5th

3070 Views 13 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  12secEVO
I modified my Greddy BOV by removing the lighter spring inside the BOV, leaving the heavier one in. This solved the problem of the car stalling at low rpms, after reversing and and pulling forward and the stuttering at 0-4 lbs of boost. However now I experience fuel cut when I'm in 5th gear at cruising speed (68-73 mph) and I will get fuel cut and a SES light thrown. I have since put the stock BOV back on all problems are solved, however the performance aspects of the BOV I miss very much. The intake helps the turbo spool a little faster but the BOV made everything better. I plan to get an S-AFC II and take the car to Vishnu (here in CA) for tuning. I drove a friends EVO the other day that was tuned by Vishnu and I didn't want to take his car back to him. Any ideas on this guys?

well, I'm not exactly sure why your hitting fuel cut...here is a hypothesis though...it may not be correct but it is an idea.

When you removed the lighter spring, it made the valve "lighter" and easier to push up...

my guess is that you are not recirculating the valve...if you are recirculating then my whole idea is not valid.

what could be happening is that at lower rpms the valve seals well also at low boost, because that single spring is very capable of holding the valve closed. However, under higher load ie. 5th gear...the boost is sustained longer...causing the spring to undergo the pressure for a longer time this could open the valve slightly just enough to leak boost.

if the bov leaks an amount of boost. the turbo has to work harder to maintain a certain boost level...so now, maybe the boost before the BOV is 21-22psi but after it, it is 19psi...your air meter would see 21-22psi of air-flow and cut fuel...even though only 19psi is getting to the engine...it doesn't know this.

ok thats a possiblity if you aren't recirculating the valve...which I would reccomend.

Now, about Vishnu...I say f*ck vishnu...personally I strongly dislike them...they seem to be more liked in the Evo community but I would NEVER go to them. They are only in the business for money...thats all they care about, and they are a rip off...and they don't even do that good of a job at what they do. Sh*t, vishnu doesn't even install their parts, the shop right next to them does...and they both charge bitchloads for everything.

Since I have tuning experience, I know I could do a better job then vishnu could...I personally have to take some time to learn the AFC...but I know I will be able to tune mine quite well...

Also I said vishnu is only in it for the money...well, yes other shops are too... but if you call and you talk to people like Buschur, DSS, RRE, RnR...etc...those guys are really nice and actually spend some time to help you...I'm kinda baised with DSS, cause I know Mike personally...but seriously he is on the phone everytime I'm there and it seems everytime that somebody will call him with a tech question and he will take his time to help that person...I'd like to see Shiv help a DSM'r out...

They seem to "like" Evo's better...but just because of their attitudes, I wouldn't bother or waste my money with them... If you need help tuning your with your AFC, and you have gauges and proper things to monitor stuff, I'd love to help you...though I'm a good 5 hours south of you...I'm sure if you took it to another shop, like DSS (also 5 hours south :p ) that Mike would do a better job than Vishnu...and charge you less...

Well I think you will be happy to know that I've changed my mind and I'm going with a new set-up. I just ordered the WORKS P1/P2 Brain Flash from WORKS. I'm going to add a cat-back on along with tien coilovers and I'm done. What do you think of WORKS?

hmm never heard of works...I'll check out their site if you send me a link...but I think anywhere is better than vishnu...I just don't really like those guys...I'm sorry...but I don't.

personally...when I get my evo and have money to spend on parts...I think I'll either go with Buschur's stuff...like his exhaust, intake, fmic kit...but I may check out what Mike has at DSS...since he is a friend...and I wont have an Evo for quite a while now anyway...damn MR:cool: ;)
Here is the Espelier Stainless Steel Exhaust that I'm going with:

I would suggest you also do the P2 that way along with the ECU upgrade, you will hold 19psi to redline...it will help a bunch. Tiens are really nice...my friend has them on his GST...and damn...what a difference...personally I prefer JIC's but DAMN...the tiens were "bang" for buck...plus they have the EDFC ability...:thumb:

and I replied to the other thread about the exhaust...it looks nice...but I don't know anything about it.

Last...I don't think you'll be done after that...as much as you say you will...no...I doubt it...you still have a bunch of basic upgrades left that you'll end up doing...downpipe, intercooler and piping, and then a re-flash...
I ordered the P2 Flash. I drove my friends EVO the other day with Tien's and EDFC and it was very nice.

As far as my mods, like I said...I'm done besides anything small. I'm looking to buy this car soon.
It's a 1971 Lola Formula Ford. I want to start racing with my dad in the vintage races instead of helping him set-up his car and just watching him race. Here's another. Asking 22k

Good luck with that:thumb: :thumb: :thumb: Thats my dream also... I can drive, but have no clue to whom i should go... Took driving/racing classes in germany... and now I'm here in Florida... studying, so no time for fun like that... :( But I still got my dsm :D :D :D :D my little racer:dsm: :thumb:
I hope I can make it happen. If not this car, another one similar to it. My Dad has a Merlyn and I would also consider one of those. I absolutely love this LOLA though.
Here's my old man. If I get the LOLA....we'll be #21 and #22...:)

nice...that looks like a lot of fun...

And for me...I guess it just how I am...but I couldn't stay with the mod level you have...it is nice...but I just get addicted sort-of...however, I don't plan on doing a turbo upgrade to the Evo...
True but I'm older then you and I count on my daily driver to get me from point A to point B. If I mod the hell out of the car right now it's really just a waste. Besides, I believe that suiting up, gridding, and racing on a closed track is real racing and that's what I want to do. More importantly, I want to do it in a race car, not my daily driver. Things break when you race and you have to be ready to deal with that. But Monday morning, I need to go to work and not have my daily driver down for the count. Hanging out with my dad and having a beautiful vintage race car is higher up on my priority list then putting 10-15k into the EVO.
ya...I totally understand where you are coming from...and your right...I'd also love to race on a closed track and have one race car and one daily driver...that would be sweet...

but for me, I'm not in the same money boat as you...so I'm stuck trying to do it all with one car...but I think a lightly modded Evo MR should do the job quite well...

but ya I was just saying that its cool that you don't "need" to mod the evo too much...where as I would...just different positions in life...
