I just sent this to Turbo Magazine. What do you think?

Am I out of line?

I personally have not used a flash in my EVO, but for simplicity of operation and convenience I have a flashing unit from Cobb Tuning for my wifes WRX. Granted a flash is not for a "hard core" tuning adventure, but it works great, and the off the shelf maps are safe from coast to coast in all weather conditions.... just like a mail in flash for the EVO. Will a mail in flash be optimized for your setup in your particular location? Nope. Will it add power over the stock tune from the factory? Yup. I actually do think you are out of line. I don't understand why you are so rabbidly anti flash (from any vendor), and not sure why you have such a hard on for Al in particular. I don't give a crap one way or the other about Al, but flash tech is pretty darn cool and it saddens me to see you bad mouthing it every chance you get.

Keith <------ Uses an AEM EMS just like Al.... and likes flash tech as well just like Al I wonder if it is because we are both fat? :)

Thanks. I guess I should lighten up and I know flashes play their role. I like ECUTEK. I guess it's because of what's happened here and Las Vegas... and then to see five pages of his product in Turbo Magazine. Your right. Thanks. From here on out I let it go. :)

P.S.
I don't think your fat.
I wasn't aware big Al had a failure with one of his tunes. Could you give some of the particulars?

I wouldn't say you were out of line, just expressing a different opinion. Heaven knows we all have our weak points, if the mag made a saint out of Al maybe they were a little unrealistic.
Turbolarry, you've watched me progress from the first day I showed up here asking about using my old S-AFC on my new Evo. I was very successful with tuning it myself and accomplished great things at the track:

12.83 - S-AFC only with 93oct
12.64 - S-AFC/catback/mbc with 93oct
12.22 - s-afc/catback/mbc with 104oct
12.01 - S-AFC/tbe/mbc with 110oct

I have since added a BASE flash from Dynoflash, and I have to admit that it is far better overall than just having the S-AFC. I of course kept the safc installed for fine tuning on pump gas and also for race gas tuning at the track, but the SAFC was not capable of providing what the flash gave me. The most important features to me were the raised rev limit (critical for an MR on the drag strip due to 4th gear ending at 111mph), and fixed the mid-range (richened the factory lean condition while keeping timing at no less than 8*). The SAFC really IS a crude tuning device, despite how much we love it, because it can't control timing. It's just a manipulator that can be successful in the hands of a smart individual, but it still has its limitations . You cant ever change the rev limit, and the only way to get that low-end/mid-range/peak torque like a flash is by using larger injectors. That's not worth the cost, time, or tuning effort imo.

Now, to make it even better, Al is providing launch control, which is HUGE for me, because it will make me even more consistent at the drag strip. Instead of the factory 5k limiter being too low, I can now have it set to 6k, which is great. Al may have his shortcomings, and flashes may not appeal as much to the true tuning enthusiast, but they do serve purposes that can't be addressed by the SAFC.

Upon further reflection; I'm way out of line and it should not have been posted.
I apolgize to all for violating the sites rules and I know I'm not above them. The rules are there for a reason and what makes this site so good. I have to go by them too.

I thought it was very well put. It gave a different point of view on the subject, yes you broke some rules, but it was very well put. and by the way this is a Great site!
