Mild Mods to 320whp

7333 Views 20 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  MadMsheen
Hi,

Would appreciate some advise on how to get 320whp from my current basic setup:

Ralliart Intake Pipe w filter
downpipe n 3" full exhaust system n high flow cat
Walbro 255 fuel pump
boost controller
SAFC II
stock turbo
stock ecu(no flash)

Where do I start? I would like to maintain stock turbo(If possible),ecu(no flash),stock cam pulleys.

1)Should I start with the cams? 264 or 272 with stock cam pulleys?with only a
SAFC II,any problems in controlling the cams?Idling?

2)With cams,larger injectors recommended?What size?660 ok?

3)Fuel regulator required as well?

4)Or forget the cams,upgrade turbo?

5)And the last piece,larger FMIC?

All suggestions are very much appreciated.

THANKS!!

With the mods that you have, you should already be close to that hp range.
I've got, an HKS iintake, custom hard intercooler piping, HKS SSQV, Boost controller set to 21 lbs, RSR downpipe w/cat delte, and RSR cat back, and i'm in the 330 range, runnin 8.20's in the eight mile.
SO, if u wanna retain the stock turbo and ecu, just get an exhuast manifold, and 02 housing, that should get you what you want.
First thing you do is go find a dyno! Then you should have someone tune your SAFC on the dyno with a wideband. See what you are making and then move from there. I don't think a reflash would hurt though. Good luck and keep us posted.
Thanks guys for your input. Will post some figures once I have it.

Just wondering,I wud like to mod my standard turbo. If I am not mistaken, the std turbo has a 16G compressor? How much difference in power if upgraded to 18G?Can 20G fit?

How much difference in hp upgrading to 10.5 hotside?

Thanks!
You might want to check out Bushur Racing's 20G or Forced Performance's White Rabbit if you want a bigger compressor wheel in a stock turbo.

truthfully not neccessary for a flash if you know you want to have a retune. with retune you would have 330 whp. though you are missing some fuel injectors, maybe a 650? 750? well anyways that should do it. make sure you take it to a awesome tuner though, non of that bootleg stuff. im sure your car is making about 310-315 but dont take my words for it. for myself, i have an full tbe from the 02housing. and an ARC airbox im pushing right about 300 on an evo 9 MR.

main issue with evo's. we are lacking air not fuel.

my two cents.

This thread is from 2005.

A flash is definitely recommended.

Absolutely _no_ need for upgraded injectors.
Brother, here's what I'm thinking. Your target is 320whp. Just like the rest of the fellahs, I believe that you're already well on your way once you get a tune. For the '03, it comes stock about 230whp, cams will add about 20whp conservatively, alky/meth combination will add about 30whp, cold air intake will add about 5whp, and an exhaust with test pipe will add about 10whp. That comes out to about 295whp without a tune and without taking account the added benefits of having a fuel pump and manual boost controller.
Pure Evo, as I said a few posts ago, this thread is from 2005. It was mistakenly revived.

TBE adds 30whp, not 10whp. Cams add 30whp. You also can't use alky without a tune, so the way you added up the power is not really valid.
thercpilot I have almost the same mods, and Iam running mid 12's with only 300whp and running stock boost. Ye LOL this tread is from 2005! Hey warrtalon if cams gives you 30whp, I need to get myself some cams!

I think you're misunderstanding me. The only thing that I was trying to point out was "conservatively" he was well on his way and that the targeted 320whp would be easily achieved with what he already had.
Just consider that adding parts to the car doesn't necasarily add power. You may gain 10hp from a intake, or 20 from a exhaust, however together they are not going to make 30 (10+20) hp just from putting them on, just doesn't work like that as you have to look at the entire system as a whole and where in the powerband you are making or losing power (shuffling) with that part.

If you pick out parts that work with each other and properly tune them then your going to make some power.

Although you are right about being able to make that hp level on the parts. I think warr is just saying your theory of adding up hp is a little off.
Does ix needs cams?
No Evo truly "needs" cams. It's just that they are an excellent mod on VIIIs, so it's a very wise mod to do for the money. On IXs, it's a bit more hit and miss, and they don't generally make as much power due to the fact that the MIVEC already manipulates the intake cam and makes a lot of power without even upgrading the cams. By the time you do cams, most IXs are already making a lot of power over stock, so there's not much more to gain on the cams...at least, not as much as you see on VIIIs.

I've just bought a set of GSC 272/272 cams for my '04 VIII. I can't wait to see how they feel once I get a tune. :D
Excellent choice.
Hey do you need ECU flash after installing cams?
Yes, you should be retuned after adding cams, but it doesn't have to be "ECU flash." EcuFlash is one type of flashing software that is a good choice to use for getting tuned.
