i recently bought a an evo mr. the thing is there is a slight grind when i put it into 3rd at a high rpm. if i shift and push the clutch in fully the grind is not there, but any thing quick and there is the grind. i've read on other threads that has happened with other evos, and i've already scheduled to have the car looked at, by a dealership. am i close to the diagnosis?

This is not normal on the MR, nor is it normal on any Evo. The only normal grind is the 5th gear syncro on 03-04s, but I haven't seen anyone complain about 3rd gear. I have 6500 miles on my MR with lots of spirited driving and 20 drag strip passes where I shifted into 3rd ~7300rpm as fast as possible, so I would say you should have no 3rd gear grind. Definitely take it in like you're doing and do not easily back down, because it sounds like you do need to get something fixed. The only other possibility I can think of is that you may let out the clutch before getting it in gear, but I think you'd know if it was your driving causing the grind.
warrtalon: thanks for the info, i guess i'll have to wait and see what the mechanics say at the dealership.hopefully everything will work out alright, and i can get some track time in.
is this your first stick car? are you sure the clutch is ALL the way down when you put it into gear? make sure of all of that before you take it in... no sense in paying them to diagnose a problem that isnt there. any grind in a new tranny is unacceptable though, no matter what the gear, as long as you are driving properly.
no, this is not my first stick car(used to have a wrx). i turned it into the dealer ship and they replaced a whole bunch of trans parts, it was a faulty synchro.they also said the the gear teeth were wore down for the third gear. it was like that from the first day i bought the car. it had 61 miles on it. those were probably the worst miles it has ever seen.
well, at least it is all better... sucks they had to rip out the tranny with only 61 miles... mine lasted 97k in my car before i had any problems. best of luck to ya.
